The REAL questions…

Tell us a little about yourself.

I am a neurotic erotic romance writer who loves to over share. Be warned. I have written under many different pen names and been published traditionally, but this is my first time to plunge into erotic romance as an indie author. Loving it so far!

What’s under your bed?

Five pairs of dusty shoes that I hate, a large bin of purses that I thought were a good idea but now I realize that I’m not an 95 year old lady in need of that style of bag, and a lot of fuzz from my constantly shedding Husky.

What comes first, plot or characters?

Characters. They usually jump around in my head, making me notice them and begging for a plot line to be created just for them. My characters are actually quite spoiled in that way. They’ve always got my attention.

Pantser, plotter, or hybrid? Tell us about your writing process.

 I believe in writing hard and fast. Get the words down. Edit later.

Oddest thing on your desk?

 I don’t know. It all looks kind of normal to me...empty flask, voodoo prayer candle, a big stack of papers I haven’t looked through in months, a dead plant, my cell phone. Isn’t that how everyone’s desk looks?

What’s your most interesting writing quirk?

 I can’t stand having people in the room when I’m working. It’s hard to write great sex scenes if you feel like someone is looking over your shoulder and questioning your latest word choice for a penis.

What’s your favorite thing about the genre you write in?

Erotic romance is awesome because it allows you to explore a whole other style of writing. I also love creating new love triangles and situations. Erotica does not have to mean straight smut either. The challenge is creating a good story that keeps your audience entertained and involved. And yeah. Good sex helps, too.

What is the hardest thing about being an author?

Marketing. At this point in my career, that is the hardest thing. Sure I hate to get bad reviews or  deal with the loneliness of not working with a partner, but mostly, I find marketing the hardest. It’s time consuming and keeps you from working.

What’s the easiest thing about being an author?

The easiest thing about being an author is reading fan mail. Nothing makes your day brighter than that!

What do you wish someone had asked you for an interview question? Here’s your chance to get the soap box out!

Esmae, what inspired you to write erotic fiction as opposed to literary fiction? Well let me tell you….I was reading a really rancid romance novel a few years ago and realized, “Hey, I can write this bad.” So I set out to write a romance. Turned out to be not bad at all! I found that romance in general is a category I have a flair for and I’ve never looked back. Thank you Really Bad Romance novel for inspiring me!

Tell us about your latest release!

 Happy to! My latest release belongs in a series I’ve created called the Naughty Shakespeare series.  Let me begin by saying that if the Bard word alive today, I would totally Fan Girl him and stalk him at all his local pubs until he promised to be my boyfriend!  I’ve always loved his words and style. But you know, strong women are not exactly his forte. Most of the girls in his plays are not completely developed compared to some of his male characters like Hamlet. I’m not sure if that is because young boys typically played the female roles and perhaps they didn’t have the chops to pull off a fully realized female character or what, but I’ve always wanted more back story about some of his more famous characters. And sex is a big part of a lot of Shakespeare’s work, too. So in my need to create stories for some of these characters, I found that their sexuality just naturally guided the tale.

 In Ophelia’s Lessons we learn about sweet Ophelia from Hamlet. Now here’s a girl who really doesn’t get a fair shake in the original play. She is used by her father, brother, and finally Hamlet who basically causes her to lose her mind. I thought it might be interesting to find out where her obsession and love for him came from. Ophelia’s Lessons are a prequel to the story of Hamlet.

Ravishing Rosaline is the story of a lesser known character mentioned only once or twice in the play Romeo and Juliet. She is Romeo’s love interest before he sees Juliet. Romeo calls her chaste and that got me to thinking, what if she isn’t all that she appears?

The Taming of the Prude is a bawdy retelling of Taming of the Shrew. I wanted to give Kate a chance to assert herself sexually in a time when most women were taught that sex and passion were not for well bred young ladies. Of course, by the end of the book, the reader should be questioning just who tames who?
