Blurb for UnStrapped...

What do you do when the man who you love more than anyone else in the world terrifies you? This is a question Shyla must confront and it takes her to her breaking point.

The only person who can bring her back is the same person who is capable of destroying her beyond repair. Shyla has seen a side of Taylor she can never forget. She now understands that not only is he capable of immense tenderness, but ruthless violence. She must decide if she will fully trust Taylor and embrace both his light and darkness, as it is clear both exist equally within him. Their pasts continue to cast a shadow over their relationship as Shyla attempts to convince Taylor that the only way they can truly embrace the future is to reopen and repair old wounds. Taylor swears anything he has ever done was to protect Shyla, but Eric's words haunt her and cast doubts on Taylor's intentions. Taylor will do anything for Shyla. Now she must decide if that is actually good thing.

An Excerpt from UnStrapped...
Stunned, I unzip the garment bag and find a long-sleeved black velvet dress with a plunging neckline. Even if he would permit me to wear a bra, it would not even be possible in this dress. The hem, I estimate, would stop about mid thigh. Inside the shopping bag is a pack of sheer black silk stockings, with one opaque line running along the back of my heel to the top of the stocking, punctuated by a small satin bow. A thin red garter belt is provided to ensure the stockings stay in place. There is also box of fire-red stilettos inside the bag, the heel so sharp and steep that my eyes widen as I rotate the shoe to examine it. Holy hooker heels. With a confounded pout on my face, I slide on the dress, stockings and shoes. The stockings turn out to be exceptionally long, stopping just below the crook of my ass, framing each cheek like a gift. I pin only one side of my hair back, exposing one shoulder. I find a lipstick to match my shoes and apply a gunmetal eyeshadow and black mascara.
Then I anxiously wait like a good girl.
It isn’t long before Taylor returns, dressed in a perfectly tailored graphite suit, a crisp white shirt and navy tie to match the muted Icelandic vistas. He had left in street clothes, and I wonder if he just picked this up. Normally I would ask, but this Taylor is not one with whom I would engage in such insignificant trivialities. You don’t waste your words with Mr. Holden.
I remain seated on the edge of the bed, instinctively waiting for him to find me and tell me what is to be done next. I fiddle with my red lacquered fingernails as my heart flutters. It is a feeling I have learned to love and hate: not knowing what Taylor will do or say, but relishing in the agony of anticipation.
I sense I am in trouble, but I can’t know for sure until he decides to disclose. Asking is futile.
His footsteps are quick and come to an abrupt stop when he finds me. Without uttering a word, he reaches for one of my hands and incites me to stand. I look up expectantly as his piercing jade eyes assess me. Am I pleasing to his frigid yet fiery glare? His poker face reveals nothing. He takes a half a step closer, so that his breath tickles my hairline. Then, he grazes the tips of his knuckles along the smoothness of the velvet, starting at my right shoulder, and trailing down the deep V-neckline of my dress, stopping just at the peak of my breast. My clit lights up with arousal, begging for his relief. And he fucking knows it. My hips involuntarily jut forward just a centimeter, but he reads those subtle cues like a sexual seismograph. His eyes sharply shift to my pelvis and then back up to my eyes. Despite all of the questions in my mind, they plead with him in silence, large and doe-like. I am willing to forget it all tonight if he’ll just relieve me of the desire for him that bleeds through my skin. It’s something I know he can sense from across a room and he uses it to lull me like a snake charmer would. He feeds off of my desperation for him, the way my pulse speeds when he blows on my neck, or stares at me like a wolf patiently stalking his prey. And so, he will make me wait, delighting in my angst.

His eyes track down to my breastbone, and his knuckle grazes my already rigid nipple. A small puff escapes my barely parted red lips as my back arches towards him. I clench my fists at my sides, using whatever I have left of my willpower not to grab him and pull him closer.

Taking the Move Out Of Your Writing: Choosing Better Verbs #amwriting #editing #authorhelp

On Facebook I often have a Dear Author post that deals with what's going on around me. It might be a rant about usage of passive voice, or lack of etiquette, or a plea for more bacon and man candy posted on my wall.. who knows what tickles my fancy at any given moment. I have decided since I don't personally blog enough that I would transfer my Dear Author posts here.

So today's post:

Dear Authors,

Please strike the word "move" from your writing vocabulary. It's weak and non-descriptive. Example: He moved across the yard. He skipped (or hobbled, limped, crawled, flew, streaked, sashayed, waddled) across the yard. See how much better that is? Think how much better your sex scenes will be, too! No more moving in and out, moving his hand up her body (yes, get rid of body as well!)

Love, Mia.

~*~

Discussion:
The word "move" is a pet peeve of mine while reading, in my own writing, and in any editing I do for other authors. It's a vague verb and doesn't give the reader a good description of what's going on besides something or someone changing location (however small.) It's not a horrible word all alone, but when you read a paragraph in a book that contains three or four moves in one paragraph it becomes tedious.

The above example shows that a better verb gives you an entirely different mental picture. Let's discuss it more here.

Example: He moved across the yard.
Better: He skipped (or hobbled, limped, crawled, flew, streaked, sashayed, waddled) across the yard.

A man might waddle because he's overweight, he might be limping because he's a zombie and he's missing half of his leg. He's skipping because he's won the lotto, or he's crawling because he doesn't want to be seen by the Ninjas next door. There are so many mental images you can give your reader by simply changing that one word.

Sex scenes can be flooded with the word move if the author isn't careful.

Example: He moved in and out.
Better: He thrust.

Example: He moved his hand up her body. (The word BODY is an entirely different rant, but strike that from your vocabulary, too!)
Better: He caressed a path from her abdomen to the hem of her panties.

Places where "move" might be okay....
Example: Move your ass!
Example: He moved from NYC to Denver last week.
Example: He's got the moves like Jagger. (He doesn't, but it works.)

As an order, move works. It also works in the general terms of packing your crap and living somewhere else because it takes too long to say, "I packed my crap and relocated to Denver." And moves like Jagger...enough said.

See how much better it is to use active verbs when possible?

Motorcycle Club Culture And Take the Heat Guest Post by Cynthia Rayne #EroticRomance #MC

Today we have a guest post by Cynthia Rayne, Amazon best selling author of  The Four Horseman MC series. Captivated is the title for her offering in the Take the Heat anthology and revolves around one of her members of the Four Horsemen outlaw motorcycle club. The author will be awarding a $15 Amazon gift card to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter between this tour and the Review Tour, here.

Researching the Motorcycle Club (MC) Culture
Guest Post by Cynthia Rayne

Write what you know.

Every writer has heard this advice or one point or another in his or her career and it’s great advice. There is nothing worse than reading a short story, novella, or novel where it’s clear the author has no familiarity with a particular subject. However, I would add that what you don’t know, you must research.

Captivated, my story in the Take the Heat anthology is centered on Jonathan Royal, a member the Four Horsemen, an outlaw motorcycle club.  This story is set in part of my Four Horsemen MC series world. Since I have never been a member of motorcycle gang, I had to do some serious research!

News
I started learning about outlaw motorcycle gangs by searching for news articles, mostly online. I wanted to get a feel for the criminal enterprises someone like Royal might be involved in. And did I find plenty of illegal activities I could dramatize! However, I think it is important to note that not all bikers are involved in illegal endeavors. But for the purposes of my story, I wanted to make sure that Royal was a convicted felon. Never underestimate the appeal of a bad boy!

Official Sources
Another helpful resource was law enforcement websites and publications. For example, the Department of Justice has a guide of sorts on outlaw motorcycle gangs. They actually use the acronym OMG.  Despite the thirteen-year-old-girlness of the acronym, this report gave more in-depth information about criminal activities, as well as specifics about particular groups.

Cultural Resources
I wanted to make sure that Royal sounded like a biker, albeit one with some traditional Southern charm. There are plenty of websites and forums that are made for and about outlaw bikers, or one-percenters, as they preferred to be called. By the way, I discovered that particular term comes from a fight that occurred in July of 1947 between two rival clubs, which prompted the American Motorcyclists Association to state that very few clubs were involved in illegal activity –at their estimate, only one percent. Anyway, I spent some time on forums and loops to soak up some of the culture, learn terminology, and speak with real bikers. By and large, they were friendly and very helpful.

Pop Culture Resources
Alexandria Sokoloff, an award-winning writer and lecturer, discusses the importance of fulfilling the promise of your genre in her book, Screenwriting Tricks for Authors.  She recommends utilizing movies from the same genre in order to get a “feel” for what readers or viewers might expect. Since my book is set in the world of outlaw bikers, I binge watched episodes of Sons of Anarchy, an FX show that centers on a fictional biker gang in California. I also checked out some biker documentaries on the Sturgis biker rally and other helpful films. In addition, I read other motorcycle romance novels, to get a gist of what the market was like.

All of these resources provided a wealth of information. So in summary, write what you know and research what you don’t.  A little bit of investigation can give your story, novella, or novel a more authentic feel, which will ultimately help readers to “buy in” to the world you are creating.

EXCERPT FROM “CAPTIVATED” BY CYNTHIA RICHARDS

“You never told me your name.”

I glanced in the rearview mirror to see my prisoner, Jonathan Royal, studying my reflection from behind the metal bars that separated us. Despite the orange jumpsuit, he was a looker. Thick black hair, soulful brown eyes, a full sensual mouth, and a squared jaw. Born and raised in Alabama, he had impeccable manners and exuded charm by the bucket load.

Well, as much a killer could.

I focused on the road once more. Truly, a bone-chilling January night and I had to watch for patches of slick black ice on the overpasses. “As far as you’re concerned my name is Deputy Marshall or a ma’am. Take your pick.”

“Just figured we could get more familiar, since we are on a road trip and all, ma’am.”

“We aren’t going on a ski trip, Royal. This is a prison transport.” Prisoners always underestimated me, particularly men. I could see why. At 5’2 with a curvy build, long red hair and wide blue eyes, I looked more like a Sunday school teacher than a threat. But, he should know that appearances could be deceiving. I’d taken guys on nearly twice my size and won.

“All I want to know is your name. That’s all. Two little bitty names. Hardly seems fair, since you know everything about me from my jacket. Why,” he drawled. “I bet you know my height, weight, birthday, and exact location and detailed description of each and every single one of my tattoos.” He whispered that let part, a husky little vocal caress, which felt like it had been purred into my ear.

I shivered and not from the cold seeping in my windowpane either.

Damn it. Why couldn’t he be just some ugly old guy? I shouldn’t even be alone with him. Since the recession, the marshal service had gone through a series of debilitating cutbacks. Normally, two marshals would be transporting someone as dangerous as Royal and he’d be stuffed and cuffed in the back of gas-guzzling van, so I’d only have to see him at the beginning and the end of the trip. Now, only a few thin bars separated us and I didn’t have a partner with me. Someone else I could talk to. So much easier to pretend the prisoner didn’t exist when I could bullshit about weather and bad coffee on the road with a fellow officer.

“If I were you? I would keep my mouth closed and quit while I was ahead. Looks to me like you got a pretty sweet deal, transferring from a maximum security prison to minimum for being such a good boy. Going to be like Club Fed for you. I hear at Elkton, they have a gardening club and a recue dog program. It’s going to be like going to college. Why do you want to risk your oh so exemplary record by harassing me?”

“Not that is a conundrum worth pondering. Perhaps you make me lose control, Miss Marshal.”

Behind The Book with Whitley Gray and Artistic Endeavor #CampusCravings #mm

Today we have Whitley Gray, one of the authors from our anthology, Campus Cravings: Higher Learning m/m bundle. Whitley is sharing how she got her idea for Artistic Endeavor and offering up an excerpt! She's giving away a digital copy of Rabbit Wars to one lucky comment leaver.

Enjoy!

~Mia

Behind the Book: Artistic Endeavor
When the Campus Cravings group got together to craft a series of stories set at a fictional university in the Northeast, I wanted a unique take on that time of life. I sat down and thought back to my college days. Art was always a big part of it. LGBTQ life wasn’t. I thought about the “why” of that.

What would happen if a gay guy spent the first twenty-five years of his life hiding because he came up through a strict religious upbringing—not only in high school, but had the same situation continue on through college and grad school?

What if he finally emerged free of parental/parochial influence and could be himself when he got his first job?
What if he had no clue how to be…gay?

Cobey was born. Gorgeous, painfully shy and woefully inexperienced, he’s an art professor, newly hired on at a liberal university. Lots of opportunities to meet men, but Cobey has no idea how to go about dating, let alone sex. Cobey needs an instructor, someone who can show him the ropes without devouring him like a virginal lamb chop.

Enter Michael. In some ways, he’s Cobey’s opposite. Very experienced—in fact, a connoisseur of the one-night stand—and terrified of love. As a graphic artist he’s got a lot in common with Cobey. Unlike his lothario reputation, Michael is kind-hearted, caring, and patient.

I loved writing these two coming together and discovering things neither knew about himself. Cobey may be the newbie, but he’s got a thing or two to teach Michael. Summer made for the ideal season to put the guys together, allowing for more relaxed settings. Pride got to play a role too. Overall, as much fun to write as I hope it is to read.
~Whitley

Artistic Endeavor excerpt
In the dimly lit bar, Michael drummed his fingers on the table. “Maybe you should have let me meet him somewhere without you two along as chaperones.”

Eli chuckled. “It took me a week to convince him to meet you. He’d never go for the blind date thing.”

“Well, he’s late. Sure he’ll show?”

“Relax.” Burke massaged Eli’s neck. “He’ll be here.”

Ordinarily Michael looked forward to sizing up a new man. In fact, he’d already taken stock of every guy in the room. If Cobey didn’t show, the bartender looked like a good prospect. Prolonged eye contact, a big grin, and a wink when serving Michael’s beer. Yep, good prospect. Someone new.

Of course, Cobey would be new. Too new. Michael sighed. How was he supposed to introduce himself? Hello. I’m the guy our mutual friends have asked to be your sex instructor. How’s it hangin’? Yippee.

“There.” Eli nodded at the entrance. “Just coming in.”

For a moment it was too crowded to see much, but the herd of patrons parted. Michael licked his lips. Well, well, well. The picture hadn’t done Cobey justice. Nicely wide shoulders, narrow hips, hair a man could get a grip on. Dark eyes. A perfect mouth—full but not too full. How was it possible this gorgeous male specimen had never been intimate with another guy? And Michael had the opportunity to be the first one.

I can certainly sacrifice myself for the greater good by teaching him.

Fab 5 Questions for Mia Downing

Whitley Gray tagged me for Fab 5 Questions. So here are my answers!

1. What am I working on?
It's hard to classify what I'm working on because it just doesn't fit any category I try to put it in. It is unique, edgy, different, kinky, suspenseful, and romantic. This one is traditional in that it's a hero and heroine. But there is absolutely no category that it truly fits in, because it straddles so many lines.

I know that sounds cryptic, but I don't quite have a blurb yet to share. When I do, you'll be the first to read it!

2. How does my work differ from others of its genre?
I have no clue how to answer this, so I turned to my 1# stalker fan and asked her opinion. She said, "The way you write angst and how sensual your characters are without being sappy makes your work differ."

3. Why do I write what I do?
I love the happily ever after of romance and they were the books I gravitated to when I was old enough to love the domineering men on the front of the historicals or Harlequin Presents novels my grandmother read. But I like erotic romance because I can use sex as another way to show character growth and intimacy. I had a friend basically call it porn and it's not. I don't write it with the intention to excite or turn readers on. I write to push the boundaries for my characters in and out of bed, and if they find it a hot read in the process, that's great.

4. How does my writing process work?
I am a crazy writer. I first start by seeing a scene. I start asking questions. Who? What? Why? Where? I usually find some music that fits them (and it's random why it fits. My WIP has music from Pink, Requiem from a Dream, and a song from Divergent. I write the beginning (first 3-4 chapters) then usually I see the ending and write that. Then I connect the middle. I write scenes out of order and then just make them all connect. As far as plotting...until this book it's all been in my head and as the story develops. This book I've actually taken some notes and made a few plot diagrams for future books because there are some very intricate points. But usually I don't write much down. So far, no one has complained.

5. Where can you find my work?

#Steampunk Goodness with A Gentleman and a Rogue Book Blast

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Stehphanie will be awarding $25 GC to Amazon to a randomly drawn winner via the rafflecopter at the end of this post during the tour. Click on the banner to visit other stops on this tour.

Lady Keira Russell is destined to bring compressed natural gas to Britain. Her inner courage and mental toughness rarely falter – except when Prince Edmund Windsor is involved.

Edmund of Wales is from the future. His last jaunt through history muffed up the time line. Now, he's here to set it straight and win Keira's heart.

For Keira, if it isn't one obstacle, it's another. Queen Victoria has sponsored a competition to find a cleaner fuel source than coal. Keira's father is trying to build a windmill and the Ridgecrofts are working with gasoline. Then there's Edmund, whose sensual kisses and heated stares distract her down to her bones.

Keira has a choice: trust Edmund's notorious mischief-making or put her faith in Queen Victoria to make the right decision, but if Keira makes the wrong choice, the future of Great Britain will be changed forever.

Enjoy an excerpt:

Richard pursed his lips. "All right, then. I have orders to take you, Alice, Grayson, and Jonas back immediately."

"That ought to be fun -- especially Jonas. He's helping Keira's father build a windmill." "Petrol and electricity are the future."

Edmund grimaced. "No, they aren't. Alice and I tried to tell you -- Keira's compressed natural gas powers our future." His voice filled with conviction.

"Ever since we were children--"

"History changed when Grayson came with Alice. He's here to fix it now."

Keira held up her hands. "Now, boys, let's not raise our voices. I have a feeling you've had this conversation before and came to no resolution."

"That's true," Edmund conceded. Richard nodded.

Edmund glared at his brother. "I'm not leaving. Alice and I have every intention of setting history straight."

Richard sighed.

"Besides, the only way to get back to the future is for us to warm our coin necklaces in our hands. You can't do that for us."

"Ever heard of an override switch?"

"No." Edmund's eyes narrowed. He didn't like the sound of that.

"Professor Byron gave me one."

A sinking feeling descended into the pit of his stomach. "What other tricks do you have up your sleeve?"

"That's telling."

Exasperated, Edmund raked a hand through his hair. "Think this through, Richard. No, better yet -- listen to your instincts."

His brother chuckled.

"What's so funny?"

"I had an interesting conversation about instincts today with Jocelyn."

Keira tilted her head slightly, a curious expression crossing her face. "Do you know Jocelyn well?"

"I'm staying with the Dunkirks."

"I can't imagine Lord Ridgecroft meeting the suitable test with his goggles and cigars," said Edmund.

"Actually, I find Jocelyn and her father very refreshing."

"So, Richard, what are you going to do?" Edmund asked.
